The Department of Mechanical Engineering was started in the year 1977 with an intake of 40 students offering Diploma in Mechanical and Rural Engineering giving importance to Rural based  Engineering subjects. This Department was awarded Autonomous status during the year 1981. Unique feature of this course was apart from studying mechanical engineering subjects, subjects like surveying, basics of civil engineering, Community and Rural Development, Civil drawing were given.

At present, Diploma in Mechanical Engineering is offered with an Intake of 60 students in first year with 10 standard as entry qualification and 12 students as lateral entry during II year with Higher secondary / ITI as entry qualification. The syllabus are revised every 3 years based on Industrial needs.
